The museum opened in 1987 as the Sheffield Bus Museum, and was located at tram sheds at the Tinsley depot in Sheffield. The museum moved to its present location in 2007, when it also changed its name. Since late 2009 there are two units: bay 8 and bay 9. The origins of the SBMT(Sheffield Bus Museum Trust) were actually much earlier, when schoolboys at High Storrs Grammar School became interested in the local transport scene. By the late sixties a 1946 vintage Leyland PD1 double deck bus had been purchased by a group that was the nucleus of the Sheffield Omnibus Enthusiasts Society, the aim of which was to preserve an old bus. Thus was the local area interest in the conservation of historical vehicles formed. The Museum is currently home to around 50 vehicles including cars, buses, a tramcar body and two tractors. Some of these vehicles are owned by the museum and some are privately owned. All of these vehicles are at different stages of restoration, some fully restored to their former glory. A list of the vehicles is available for download.

In addition to the Saturday opening of the museum there are also a number of Event Days throughtout the summer. For example on the 8th of May there will be a Bus Running Day featuring preserved buses running on routes around the local area including Conisbrough Castle. On Event Days a shuttle bus runs between Rotherham Interchange stand C1 and the museum from 10.45am. The Event days are usually on a Sunday. "Not your usual museum building, but spacious and easy to take a wheel chair around. Lots of small memorabilia, a bric a brac sale to raise funds, devoted volunteers on hand to answer questions and guide visitors round." - Trip Advisor comment, 2012.
