Lake with Lillies

Lake with Lillies

Burnby Hall Gardens are situated in the charming market town of Pocklington, on the edge of the Yorkshire Wolds. These iconic Yorkshire Gardens have been described as "a jewel in Yorkshire’s crown”. The Upper and Lower Lakes are home to a National Collection of over 100 varieties of Hardy Water Lily, and offer a wonderful array of changing vistas. The Gardens also include a Rockery, Stumpery, a Victorian Garden, Secret Garden, formal beds and natural shrubbery. Both lakes are stocked with incredible goldfish that allow the visitor to literally hand feed fish pellets straight into their gaping mouths. Throwing some pellets into the water makes the water look like it begins to boil as the fish start to feed. Fishing is not permitted.

Burnby Hall Gardens are often referred to as "a haven of beauty and tranquillity” and were the inspiration of Major Percy Marlborough Stewart. He was an amazing man who made eight round the world tours between 1906 and 1926. The Stewart Museum within the Gardens is dedicated to his extraordinary life and contains the fascinating artefacts he brought back to Pocklington. With the exception of Assistance Dogs, they do not allow dogs in the Gardens. The Gardens, Lilypad Cafe, Museum and Gift Shop are all wheelchair and pushchair friendly. They have disabled toilet facilies and a baby changing area. There are two viewing platforms in the Gardens which allow wheelchairs and pushchairs to be positioned right up to the edge of each of the Lakes. All areas, with the exception of the rockery, are wheelchair accessible with suitable paths around the Gardens. They also have wheelchairs available to borrow free of charge.
